Tally Ira (Docs by Ira) review: what it does, what it won't, and when you need more

TallyPrime 7.1 can now read your supplier bills. Here's an honest look at where it works, where it stops, and what to do with the bills it can't read.

Short answer

Tally Ira, sold as Docs by Ira, is an AI feature inside TallyPrime that reads invoices and creates draft vouchers you review before they're saved. It's a strong fit if most of your bills are clear, printed English PDFs or images from regular suppliers. It stops at handwritten bills, regional-language invoices, bank statements, Excel files and files sitting in Gmail or Google Drive. You get 100 free pages, then you buy page packs.

The new Tally Ira button, and the pile it has to face

Picture a Surat CA practice in the last week of the month. A client's supplier bills have arrived as PDFs on email, phone photos on WhatsApp, a few Gujarati bills from a local transporter and one Excel sheet from a distributor. Someone has to type all of it into TallyPrime.

Tally Ira is Tally's answer to that pile. It's been talked about a lot since TallyPrime 7.1, and the question people search for most is simple: is Tally Ira free or paid? The next one is whether it can replace the person typing.

I build AI agents that work on top of Tally, so I have an interest here. I'll be fair to Tally anyway. For a lot of businesses Ira is the right first step, and they shouldn't pay anyone for more.

What is Tally Ira, exactly?

TallyIra is the name Tally uses for its AI layer, and Docs by Ira is its first product. It reads a business document and turns it into a draft accounting entry in TallyPrime. It arrived with TallyPrime 7.1. Tally's release notes date 7.1 to 20 May 2026, and the launch announcement was covered on 23 June 2026.

Here's how it works, according to Tally's help pages:

  1. You register your TallyPrime serial number for Docs by Ira and update your licence.
  2. You bring in documents. On the desktop, through Import or through Autofill while creating a voucher. On the TallyIra mobile app, by taking a photo of the bill, uploading a file from your phone, or sharing files to the app from WhatsApp.
  3. Ira extracts the party name, invoice number, date, amounts, GST and line items.
  4. It matches the party ledger by GSTIN first, then by exact name, and stock items by part number first, then by exact name. If a master doesn't exist, you can create it from the extracted values.
  5. Everything lands in a draft report. Your books don't change until you save the drafts as regular vouchers.

The help FAQ lists eight voucher types: Purchase, Sales, Purchase Order, Sales Order, Delivery Note, Receipt Note, Credit Note and Debit Note. The release notes say Journal vouchers were added in Docs by Ira Release 4.0.

Is Tally Ira free or paid?

Both. It starts free and then it's paid.

  • Free: Tally's product page says every eligible serial number gets 100 free pages, one time only. The help FAQ adds that the free pages are for two months.
  • Paid: after that you buy a recharge pack. The product page lists a Regular Pack of 200, 400 or 600 pages and a Pro Pack of 3,000 pages, each valid for one year, plus 18% GST.
  • Price: the rupee amounts on the product page didn't display properly when I checked. A Tally cost guide dated 13 July 2026 says Docs by Ira is "priced at ₹ 200 + GST for a pack of 100 pages". Treat that as a starting point and confirm with your Tally partner.

Tally doesn't show the rupee price of each pack on the product page, so ask your Tally partner for the current price before you budget for it.

To use it at all you need an active TSS subscription and a TallyPrime licence in India. The product page says Release 7.1 or above, while the help FAQ says 7.0 or later. If your TSS is active, Tally says the upgrade is free, so I'd just move to 7.1.

One thing to ask your partner: the quota is counted in pages, and the FAQ doesn't define a page. It does say Ira processes every page of a PDF, so check how a three-page invoice is counted before you buy a pack.

Where Docs by Ira does a good job

For the most common case, a printed GST invoice from a regular supplier, Ira is built well.

  • It lives inside TallyPrime. Your accountant doesn't learn new software or move files between two systems.
  • Nothing is posted without review. Tally's page says it plainly: "Nothing posts to TallyPrime without your review and approval. Always."
  • It learns your mappings. Correct a party or item mapping once and it's applied next time.
  • It flags likely duplicates, which matters when the same bill arrives as a WhatsApp photo and an email PDF.
  • Tally says your documents are used only to process your work, aren't shared and aren't used to train models for others.

If most of your bills are English PDFs from suppliers you buy from every month, start with Ira. Seriously. Spend the 100 free pages before you spend money on anything else.

Where Ira stops

Each limit below comes from Tally's own help FAQ or product page. Next to it is the bill that runs into it in a typical Indian office, and what I'd do about it.

  • Handwritten bills. The FAQ says Ira "does not support accurate voucher creation by importing handwritten documents", and the product page says handwritten documents aren't supported. Where you'll see it: a WhatsApp photo of a handwritten kachha challan from a transporter. Fix: a person enters it, or a separate reader extracts it and a person confirms every field. Oddly, a Tally blog post from October 2026 says Ira does read handwritten invoices. The official FAQ and product page say no, so test it on your own bills before you rely on either.
  • Regional languages. "Currently, Docs by Ira supports only English-language invoices." Where you'll see it: a Gujarati bill from a local supplier, or a bilingual Hindi and English one. Fix: an AI reader that handles Gujarati or Hindi, with a person checking every field before it goes to Tally.
  • Bank statements. Not supported. Where you'll see it: the monthly statement PDF your accountant reconciles. Fix: if you bank with Axis, SBI, Kotak or ICICI, TallyPrime's connected banking is the place to look. Otherwise, it's a separate workflow.
  • Word and Excel files. Not supported. Where you'll see it: a distributor who sends a monthly Excel of all deliveries. Fix: that's data already, so import it as data instead of reading it as a picture.
  • Files in Gmail, Google Drive or OneDrive. Ira can't import from cloud platforms. And TallyPrime's Gmail connection only sends mail: Tally's policy says it "cannot view or read your mailbox at any time". Where you'll see it: 40 supplier invoices sitting in an inbox. Fix: something has to fetch them first. I've covered that flow in the Tally Gmail post at /blog/tally-gmail-integration-invoices/.
  • Several invoices in one PDF. Each file must hold one transaction. Where you'll see it: a supplier's monthly PDF with 15 invoices stapled together. Fix: split the file before you import.
  • Batch rules. Every file in one upload must be the same voucher type. The app takes 10 files at a time, up to 5 MB each. The desktop takes 3 MB per file and 15 MB per ZIP folder. Where you'll see it: a month-end folder of 200 mixed bills. Fix: sort by type first.
  • Extraction quirks. The FAQ says Ira doesn't extract phone numbers or bank details, and freight charges can come out as stock items. Where you'll see it: a supplier whose bank details changed. Fix: your accountant still reads each draft. That's the point of the draft step.

How I'd test Tally Ira before trusting it

Run it on your own mess, the bills that annoy your accountant most.

  1. Take a backup of the company data first. Tally's FAQ recommends it too.
  2. Pick 20 real bills from last month: clean PDFs, phone photos, your worst supplier's format, a multi-page invoice.
  3. Run them through Ira and leave the drafts unsaved.
  4. Check each draft against the bill: party, GSTIN, invoice number, date, taxable value, tax split, line items.
  5. Count how many were right without a single edit. That number tells you more than any review, including this one.

What else is in TallyPrime 7.1

Ira got the headlines. Tally's what's-new page and release notes list a few other changes worth knowing about:

  • Eight new invoice templates you can customise with logos, watermarks and terms.
  • Connected banking extended to ICICI Bank, alongside Axis, SBI and Kotak.
  • Online HSN/SAC validation inside TallyPrime.
  • An Excel-based Schedule III (Division I) tool for companies with net worth below ₹250 Cr, enabled through your Tally partner.
  • Secure e-mailing with OAuth, so TallyPrime can send mail through providers such as Gmail and Microsoft.

When you need more than Ira, and when you don't

Most businesses don't need anything beyond Ira. If you get a few dozen English bills a month and your accountant reviews the drafts, adding another tool on top is a waste of money. If the volume is tiny, typing is fine too.

You need more when the bills that hit the limits above are a real share of your month: invoices that have to be pulled out of Gmail, regional-language bills, handwritten challans from transporters, or rules Ira doesn't know, like "anything above ₹50,000 goes to the owner first".

That's the gap we work in. We put AI agents on top of the tools you already use, with a person approving every voucher before it reaches Tally. The invoices-to-Tally setup is at /integrations/invoices-to-tally/.

Try Ira first, then call us for the rest

Use your 100 free pages on real bills. Write down which ones Ira couldn't handle. If that list is short, you're done. If it's long, email it to tea@dizilus.com and I'll tell you honestly whether it's worth building anything for.

Questions people ask

Is Tally Ira free or paid?

It starts free. Each eligible TallyPrime serial number gets 100 free pages, one time. After that you buy a recharge pack: Regular (200, 400 or 600 pages) or Pro (3,000 pages), valid for a year, plus 18% GST. Confirm the current price with your Tally partner.

Which TallyPrime version do I need for Docs by Ira?

Tally's product page says Release 7.1 or above, with an active TSS subscription and an Indian licence. The help FAQ says 7.0 or later. Upgrading is free if your TSS is active, so 7.1 is the safe choice.

Can Tally Ira read handwritten bills?

Tally's help FAQ and product page say handwritten documents aren't supported for accurate voucher creation. A Tally blog post from October 2026 says otherwise, so test a few of your own handwritten bills before relying on it.

Does Docs by Ira post entries to my books automatically?

No. It creates draft vouchers. Your company data only changes when you review the drafts and save them as regular vouchers.

Can Tally Ira read Gujarati or Hindi invoices?

Not yet. Tally's FAQ says Docs by Ira currently supports only English-language invoices.
